SPC vs LVT Flooring: The Main Difference
SPC flooring is a resilient floor covering with a rigid mineral-filled polymeric core, usually supplied as click-lock planks for floating installation. LVT flooring describes luxury vinyl tiles or planks with a more flexible construction; depending on the product, it may be dryback (glue-down), self-adhesive, loose lay or click-install.
SPC is worth assessing when a project calls for rigid planks and a mechanical floating floor. LVT can be attractive when the project needs a glue-down surface, a lower floor build-up or a particular commercial layout. Neither category is universally stronger, more waterproof or longer-lasting. Tested product performance and the site conditions decide suitability.
What Are SPC and LVT Made Of?
SPC rigid-core vinyl flooring
A common SPC construction uses a calcium-carbonate-filled PVC core, printed decorative film, clear wear layer and a UV-cured surface coating. The core supports the plank and the machined click profile. Some models add a balancing layer or an attached IXPE pad. These are optional structural details, not universal layers in every SPC product.
Provides plank rigidity. Mineral content alone does not establish quality: formulation, consolidation, edge toughness and dimensional stability must be considered together.
Reference constructions include no pad or 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mm attached IXPE. Acoustic performance belongs to the tested floor assembly, not the pad description alone.
Simplified schematic. Actual layer count and order vary by model; the click joint is machined into an edge, not an extra material layer.
Flexible LVT tiles and planks
LVT also uses vinyl-based materials, decorative effects and protective surfaces, but the construction is generally more flexible than rigid-core SPC. Products sold as LVT are not all installed the same way. A factory-applied adhesive on a self-adhesive tile is different from a dryback tile requiring site-applied adhesive. Loose-lay products may still need perimeter or grid fixing, depending on their installation instructions.
Both SPC and LVT can reproduce wood, stone or other printed designs. Check repeat patterns, gloss, embossing and batch shade rather than assuming every wood-look plank is identical. The terms UV coating and wear layer refer to distinct functions; UV curing alone does not prove long-term exterior sunlight resistance.
SPC vs LVT Flooring Comparison Table
| Specification | SPC Click Flooring | LVT Tiles / Planks |
|---|---|---|
| Core structure | Rigid mineral-filled polymeric core | Generally more flexible vinyl-based structure |
| Reference thickness | Approx. 3.6–8.0 mm board thickness in the supplied reference range | 1.2–4.0 mm in the supplied schedules; other LVT ranges vary |
| Installation | Primarily floating click-lock in the reference range | Dryback, self-adhesive, loose lay or click, by model |
| Subfloor preparation | Must meet flatness, moisture and movement requirements; uneven support stresses joints | Must meet flatness and moisture limits; thinner gluedown products need careful substrate finishing |
| Water exposure | Water-resistant core does not waterproof the complete floor | Product may resist water, but joints, adhesives and substrate still matter |
| Typical purchasing risk | Click profile compatibility, heat exposure, backing and floor movement | Adhesive compatibility, subfloor telegraphing and fixing method |
| Commercial suitability | Determine using actual wear, indentation, rolling-load, slip and other relevant test data; not by thickness alone. | |
SPC and LVT Thickness: Why the Wear Layer Matters
The total product thickness and transparent wear-layer thickness must be recorded separately. A 5.0 mm plank is not automatically more abrasion-resistant than a 4.0 mm plank; surface formulation and test results can differ. The supplied SPC schedules include wear layers of 0.15, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50 mm across different series. The reference LVT schedules include 0.10–0.50 mm options, subject to format.
| Wear-layer range | Initial sourcing context | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 0.10–0.20 mm | Lower-traffic or budget-sensitive configurations in certain LVT/SPC ranges | Use classification, surface performance and actual expected footfall |
| 0.30 mm | Common comparison point for residential and selected hospitality interiors | Suitability for cleaning frequency, chair movement and maintenance |
| 0.40–0.50 mm | Candidate for higher-traffic applications where these versions are available | Rolling-load, indentation, abrasion and project use requirements |
Do not treat a quoted ±0.1 mm tolerance as a universal production guarantee. Agree on the test method, sampling plan, allowed variation and measurement record for the exact order. Similarly, no wear-layer thickness automatically creates a certified residential or commercial rating.
SPC & LVT Specifications Buyers Can Compare
The following configurations are reference examples from the supplied product schedules, not confirmed live inventory or guaranteed compatible combinations. Verify the actual SKU, click system, production capacity and carton specification before quoting a customer.
SPC plank examples
| Nominal size (L × W × T) | Wear layer | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|
| 1220 × 180 × 4.0 mm | 0.30 / 0.50 mm | Main-format reference; confirm pad and click profile |
| 1220 × 180 × 5.0 mm | 0.30 / 0.50 mm | Verify decoration, pallet quantity and test reports |
| 1220 × 180 × 6.0 mm | 0.30 / 0.50 mm | Confirm whether thickness excludes attached underlay |
| 1220 × 183 × 4.0 mm | 0.15 mm | Alternative plank format; reference list records 14 pcs/carton |
| 1200 × 310 × 5.0 mm | 0.30 mm | Wide plank; reference list records 6 pcs/carton |
| 750 × 150 × 5.0 mm | 0.30 mm | A/B herringbone; verify left/right mix and matching joints |
LVT tile and plank examples
| LVT format | Thickness | Reference wear layers |
|---|---|---|
| Dryback series | 2.0 mm | 0.20 / 0.30 mm |
| Dryback series | 3.0 / 4.0 mm | 0.20 / 0.30 / 0.50 mm |
| 914.4 × 152.4 mm self-adhesive / dryback | 1.2 / 1.5 mm | 0.10 / 0.15 / 0.20 mm |
| 914.4 × 152.4 mm self-adhesive / dryback | 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.0 mm | 0.10 / 0.15 / 0.20 / 0.30 / 0.40 / 0.50 mm |
For both categories, ask whether the published dimension is the actual measured plank size, how edge profiles affect layout and how design repeats are controlled. Herringbone requires properly matched A and B pieces; a conventional straight-lay click plank cannot be substituted merely because its nominal thickness matches.
Which Flooring Is Better for Residential, Hotel, Retail or Renovation Projects?
| Project condition | Initial product direction | Approval questions |
|---|---|---|
| Apartments and living rooms | SPC click or suitable LVT | Foot traffic, pets, grit, approved substrate and cleaning |
| Hotel guestrooms | SPC or glue-down LVT depending on the installation plan | Luggage wheels, acoustic requirements, commercial warranty and replacement strategy |
| Offices and meeting rooms | SPC click or LVT dryback | Chair casters, point loads, movement joints and acoustic assembly |
| Shops, schools and supermarkets | Model with verified traffic-appropriate performance | Rolling loads, indentation, slip resistance, cleaning and use classification |
| Existing-floor renovation | Suitable thin LVT or SPC, following subfloor assessment | Hollow tiles, grout lines, door clearance, floor height and moisture |
| Basements or kitchens | Only a system approved for the actual moisture condition | Water ingress, slab moisture, joints, membranes and warranty exclusions |
Outdoor decks, exposed balconies and permanently wet shower areas are not automatically suitable for standard interior SPC or LVT. A water-resistant core is not evidence of outdoor weather resistance or a complete wet-area waterproofing system. Confirm the exact manufacturer's installation conditions and the local project specification.
SPC Click Flooring vs LVT Installation Requirements
Check substrate firmness, flatness, dryness and moisture. Plan expansion allowance, plank direction, doorways and transitions. Use only the underlay/backing combinations approved for the specific locking joint.
Verify whether the tile is dryback, self-adhesive or loose lay. Select compatible primer, leveling compound and adhesive where required. Inspect substrate smoothness and allow the installation to meet curing and traffic requirements.
Five steps before handover
- Inspect the base: Record moisture testing, flatness, cracks, loose tiles and existing finish condition.
- Approve the layout: Confirm plank direction, batch grouping, expansion spaces and threshold trim details.
- Verify the installation system: Floating click, full glue-down, self-adhesive and loose lay require different procedures.
- Control the environment: Disclose direct sun, large glazing, underfloor heating, high temperatures and persistent humidity.
- Protect the completed floor: Remove grit, use appropriate chair/furniture protectors and follow the finish-specific cleaning guide.
How SPC Flooring Is Made and What Importers Should Inspect
A common SPC workflow includes eight operations; integrated production lines may combine stages or alter their sequence. These steps explain the manufacturing points relevant to purchase inspection rather than claiming every factory uses identical machinery.
- Dry blending
Track mineral filler, resin, additives and batch uniformity.
- Extrusion
Assess rigid-core consistency, consolidation and edge toughness.
- Cooling and sizing
Check thickness stability, plank flatness and conditioning.
- Decor and wear lamination
Check wrinkles, bubbles, film alignment and bonding.
- UV finishing
Verify coating coverage, gloss and surface consistency.
- Click profiling
Trial-fit long and short edges for gaps, chipping and lipping.
- Optional IXPE attachment
Inspect backing thickness, position, adhesion and bubbles.
- Final inspection and packing
Verify size, decor/batch marking, piece count and carton labels.
Pre-shipment QC checklist
| Check | Inspection action | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Sample length, width, thickness, squareness and flatness | Method, tolerance, sample count and readings |
| Click joints | Trial-fit samples from different cartons; inspect edge chips and height variation | Joint profile, photos and acceptance limits |
| Decor and finish | Check shade, repeated pattern, gloss, embossing and delamination | Approved master sample and lot traceability |
| Performance | Match wear, stability, slip, indentation, fire and emission reports to the model | Report identifier, method, specimen and test result |
| Packing | Confirm pcs/carton, m²/carton, gross weight and pallet labels | Signed packing list and shipment photos |
Do not treat informal flashlight inspection as proof of virgin material, recycled-content percentage or emissions compliance. Request defined material declarations and finished-product documentation. Equally, an unsupported fire or low-emission label cannot replace a valid model-specific report.
